É uma forma recombinante do antagonista do receptor da interleucina-1 humana (IL-1Ra) que se utiliza, só ou associada a metotrexato, no tratamento da artrite reumatoide, da doença inflamatória multissistêmica de início neonatal e da deficiência do antagonista do receptor da interleucina-1. Administração subcutânea uma vez ao dia. Na data da última atualização não encontramos dados publicados sobre sua excreção no leite materno. Ao ser um polipéptido de 153 aminoácidos com grande peso molecular é muito pouco provável a passagem para o leite materno. Por sua natureza proteica é inativado no trato gastrointestinal, não sendo absorvido, (biodisponibilidade oral praticamente nula), o que dificulta ou impede a passagem para o plasma do bebê que mama a partir do leite materno ingerido. Não se observaram problemas em bebês que mamam cujas mães foram tratadas com anakinra. (Duman 2019, Smith 2018, Youngstein 2017, Chang 2014, Berger 2009) Autores especialistas consideram seguro o uso desta medicação durante a amamentação.
