A maioria dos anestésicos se excreta em pequena concentração no leite e/ou são de eliminação muito rápida e/ou têm uma biodisponibilidade oral baixa, o que permite amamentar tão logo a mãe esteja acordada, alerta e se encontre em condições e capaz de segurar seu bebê. (Mitchell 2020, Oliveira 2019, Fischer 2019, Reece 2017, Cobb 2015, Dalal 2014, Kranke 2011, Sønderskov 2011, Dahl 2011, Nitsun 2006, Lang 2003, Borgatta 1997, Lee 1993) A pequena quantidade de colostro obtida pelo recém-nascido nas primeiras mamadas torna ainda mais desnecessário esperar para amamentar após uma cesariana. (Rathmell 1997) Convém minimizar o uso de narcóticos e benzodiazepinas, escolher anestésicos de ação curta e anestesia regional sempre que seja possível em caso de cesariana ou intervenção cirúrgica a mães que amamentam. (Dalal 2014) A respeito da anestesia epidural, a anestesia geral em caso de cesariana retarda o início da amamentação e faz diminuir sua frequência e duração. (Kocaöz 2019, Alus 2014, Kutlucan 2014, Sener 2003, Lie 1988). O início precoce da alimentação da mãe após o despertar da anestesia melhora as condições para a amamentação. (Al-Takroni 1999) Comprovou-se aumento dos níveis de prolactina e diminuição dos de ocitocina durante a anestesia geral.
