É um agente anorexígeno e hipolipidêmico relacionado estruturalmente com a fenfluramina. Administração oral três vezes ao dia. Na data da última atualização, não encontramos dados publicados sobre sua excreção no leite materno. Devido aos frequentes e graves efeitos adversos cardiovasculares (Laurent 2022, McGee 2018, Eugène 2018, Melloul 2015, Fournier 2012), a Agência Europeia de Medicamentos recomendou a retirada do benfluorex em 2009. (EMA 2010) Há evidências de boa qualidade de que a amamentação materna exclusiva contribui para recuperar o peso pré-gravidez antes que se a amamentação for parcial (mista) ou não houver amamentação e que a amamentação prolongada ajuda a manter essa perda e a de gordura corporal.
