Anti-histamínico de 2ª geração, derivado da piperazina e metabólito da hidroxizina, com mínimo efeito sedativo e toxicidade muito baixa mesmo em doses altas. Indicado em rinite alérgica e urticária crônica. Administração oral em dose única diária. É excretada no leite materno em quantidade clinicamente não significativa ( Melander 2025, Nordeng 2024, Wegler 2022, Wilkerson 2021). Seus dados farmacocinéticos (amplo volume de distribuição, peso molecular moderadamente elevado e alto percentual de fixação a proteínas) explicam a ínfima passagem para o leite materno observada. Não foram observados problemas a curto ou longo prazo em lactentes cujas mães a tomavam. (Nordeng 2024, Wilkerson 2021, Gashlin 2016, Westermann 2012) A cetirizina foi utilizada em mães que amamentam para tratar dor mamária persistente de origem neuropática. (Muddana 2018) A sociedade britânica de Alergia e Imunologia Clínica e outros especialistas a consideram segura durante a amamentação. (Hale, Melander 2025 , Middleton 2020, Briggs 2015, Schaefer 2015, Butler 2014, Powell 2007)
