Utilizam-se as sementes desta erva leguminosa. Contém: carboidratos (mucilagens do tipo galactomanano), proteínas, saponinas, flavonoides, esteróis (colesterol, sitosterol) e sotolona. (Fitoterapia.net). Propriedades atribuídas: orexígeno, hipolipemiante e hipoglicemiante (Gong 2016). Indicações da Agência Europeia do Medicamento e da Comissão E do Ministério da Saúde alemão: uso oral para anorexia, uso tópico para dermatite. (EMA 2018, Blumenthal 1998) Alguns flavonoides como a quercetina, comuns ao feno-grego e outros alimentos vegetais, se excretam em pequenas quantidades no leite materno. (Romaszko 2014, Song 2013) Não se observaram problemas em bebês cujas mães tomavam feno-grego (Wagner 2019, Bumrungpert 2018, Reeder 2013, Turkyılmaz 2011), nem tampouco em prematuros. (Özalkaya 2018, Reeder 2013) Uma mãe nos referiu em 2025 que ao tomar feno-grego em cápsulas, seu bebê recusava seu leite, ela o provou e tinha um sabor amargo; ao suspender o feno-grego o bebê voltou a tomar o leite. Amplamente utilizado como GALACTOGOGO em numerosas culturas de todo o mundo. (Bazzano 2016, Sim 2013, The Royal Women's.. 2013, Winterfeld 2012, Ayers 2000) Muitos trabalhos não encontram nenhum efeito galactogogo com feno-grego (Palacios 2023, Simbar 2022, Reeder 2013, Damanik 2006), ou somente nos 3 primeiros dias pós-parto (Abdou 2018), ou com mel adicionado ao feno-grego. (Simbar 2022) Os estudos que documentam o aumento de produção de leite atribuível à tomada de feno-grego são escassos (Prakasam 2024, Ravi 2020, Bumrungpert 2018, Ghasemi 2015, El Sakka 2014, Turkyılmaz 2011) e com diversos defeitos metodológicos (mistura de vários compostos, falta de cegamento...) Um ensaio aleatorizado e duplo cego demonstra que uma mistura de feno-grego, gengibre e cúrcuma aumenta a produção de leite (50% em 2 semanas e 100% em 4 semanas) em mães com amamentação materna exclusiva ao mês pós-parto. (Bumrungpert 2018) Uma metanálise de 4 ensaios aleatorizados (El Sakka 2014, Reeder 2013, Turkyilmaz 2011 e Damanik 2006) mostra aumento de produção de leite do feno-grego frente a placebo, embora menos que o Coleus amboinicus (torbangun, uma sopa oriental) e o tâmara de palma, mas não houve diferenças ao final de 14 dias (Khan 2018), mas os resultados poderiam estar equivocados segundo outro autor (Grzeskowiak 2021). Precisam-se de mais e melhores estudos que tragam provas de evidência suficientes para poder fazer recomendações clínicas de seu uso como galactogogo. (Foong 2020, ABM 2018, Bazzano 2016, Mortel 2013, Forinash 2012, Zapantis 2012, Comité LM AEP 2012) Não se pôde demonstrar maior capacidade antioxidante no leite de mulheres que beberam infusões mistura desta e outras ervas. (Kavurt 2013) Dada sua ampla utilização e sua falta de toxicidade, o consumo moderado seria compatível com a amamentação, mas altas doses podem produzir hipoglicemia (Gong 2016, EMA 2011), náuseas, diarreia, dor abdominal, cefaleia, aumento de peso e um odor característico do suor, urina, fezes e leite materno devido à sotolona que pode obrigar a fazer o diagnóstico diferencial com a doença do xarope de bordo. (McBride 2021, Bazzano 2017, Korman 2001, Sewell 1999) Não utilizar como galactogogo sem controle sanitário. O melhor galactogogo é uma amamentação a demanda frequente e com técnica correta em uma mãe que conserve sua autoconfiança. (ABM 2018 e 2011, Anderson 2013, Forinash 2012, Mannion 2012)
