Antidepressivo ISRS com ações e usos semelhantes aos da fluoxetina. Administração oral em uma ou duas doses diárias. É excretado no leite materno em pequena quantidade. (Weisskopf 2017, Kristensen 2002, Arnold 2000, Hägg 2000, Yoshida 1997, Wright 1991) Os níveis no plasma dos lactentes cujas mães o tomam são indetectáveis ou muito baixos. (Kristensen 2002, Piontek 2001, Hendrick 2001) , com alguma exceção. (Arnold 2000) Embora haja algum caso isolado de gastroenterite (Uguz 2015) , não foram observados problemas a curto nem a longo prazo na maioria dos lactentes cujas mães o tomavam. (Gentile 2006, Kristensen 2002, Hendrick 2003 y 2001, Arnold 2000, Yoshida 1997, Wright 1991) Não foram observados problemas de má adaptação neonatal durante o período neonatal imediato, em recém-nascidos a termo ou prematuros cujas mães tomaram fluvoxamina durante a gravidez. (Kieviet 2015) Pode ocorrer galactorreia associada ou não a hiperprolactinemia. (Bhattacharjee 2021, Chakladar 2020, Trenque 2011, Egberts 1997) Diversas sociedades médicas e consensos de especialistas consideram seguro o uso desta medicação durante a amamentação. (Hale, Lactmed, Uguz 2021, Sriraman 2015, Orsolini 2015, Rowe 2013, Davanzo 2011, Berle 2011, Patil 2011, Lanza 2011, Gentile 2005, Rubin 2004, Gjerdingen 2003, Nordeng 2001) Podem ser preferíveis alternativas conhecidas mais seguras durante a amamentação, especialmente durante o período neonatal e em caso de prematuridade. (Weissman 2004) Mulheres com depressão durante a gravidez precisam de mais apoio à amamentação por terem maior risco de problemas e interrupção precoce da amamentação.
