Diversas sociedades médicas, especialistas e consensos de especialistas consideram que não se deve suspender a amamentação em caso de gastroenterite do lactente (Guarino 2014, Ceccarelli 2013, Melnikow 1994). A amamentação materna exclusiva protege o intestino do lactente da inflamação (Moodley 2015) e do dano epitelial causado por infecções por rotavírus (Sherif 2015). A amamentação materna protege o lactente do risco de padecer uma gastroenterite, por isso as gastroenterites em lactentes alimentados com amamentação materna exclusiva são pouco frequentes (Frank 2019, Hartman 2019, Westerfield 2018), inclusive para além do período de amamentação (Ardiç 2018), tanto em países em desenvolvimento (Turin 2014) como desenvolvidos (Paricio 2006). Os lactentes com gastroenterite por norovírus, cujas mães tinham sorologia positiva e taxa de IgA anti norovírus no leite materno, tiveram sintomas diarreicos reduzidos (Labayo 2021).
