Antibacteriano utilizado no tratamento e profilaxia de infecções do trato urinário inferior. Administração oral em quatro doses diárias. É excretada no leite materno em quantidade clinicamente não significativa ou não detectável (Gerk 2001, Pons 1990, Varsano 1973, Hosbach 1967) e não foram observados problemas em lactentes cujas mães a tomavam, exceto diarreia em alguma ocasião. (Ito 1993) Não empregar enquanto o lactente tiver menos de duas semanas, for prematuro, tiver icterícia ou deficiência de glicose 6 fosfato desidrogenase (G-6-PD), para evitar possível hemólise. (Zao 2014, WHO 2002, AAP 2001, Mactal 2001) Deve-se levar em conta a possibilidade de gastroenterite por alteração da flora intestinal. Autores especialistas consideram seguro o uso desta medicação durante a amamentação (Hale, LactMed, Briggs 2015, Schaefer2015, Zao 2014, Amir 2011, Mactal 2001) .
