Antidepressivo ISRS com ações e usos semelhantes aos da fluoxetina. Administração oral em uma dose diária. É excretada no leite materno em quantidade muito pequena, clinicamente insignificante. (Pogliani 2019, Weisskopf 2017, Salazar 2016, Misri 2006 y 2000, Stowe 2000, Ohman 1999, Begg 1999, Spigset 1996) Os níveis plasmáticos nos lactentes cujas mães tomam paroxetina são habitualmente indetectáveis ou muito baixos. (Berle 2004, Hendrick 2001, Misri 2000, Begg 1999, Birnbaum 1999) Não foram observadas repercussões clínicas nem de desenvolvimento a curto ou longo prazo. (Pogliani 2019, Uguz 2019 y 2016, Berle 2004, Merlob 2004, Hendrick 2003, Ohman 1999, Begg 1999) Pode haver problemas transitórios durante o período neonatal imediato, como a síndrome de descontinuação de antidepressivos, em recém-nascidos a termo ou prematuros que nascem com níveis plasmáticos altos porque suas mães tomam paroxetina durante a gravidez. (Hale 2010, Knoppert 2006, Costei 2002, Stiskal 2001, Nordeng 2001) A paroxetina, como outros antidepressivos, pode causar problemas de galactorreia com ou sem hiperprolactinemia.
