A tetraciclina é um antibacteriano bacteriostático com amplo espectro de atividade contra múltiplas infecções, incluindo as protozoárias. Administração oral em 4 doses ao dia. É excretada no leite materno em quantidade clinicamente não significativa. (Matsuda 1984, Gruner1955, Posner 1954) A absorção intestinal por parte do lactente é muito diminuída pela formação de quelatos inabsorvíveis com o cálcio lácteo. Não foram observados problemas em lactentes cujas mães a tomavam (Prakash 1990, Posner 1954) . Os níveis no plasma desses lactentes foram indetectáveis. (Posner 1954) Com o uso prolongado (mais de 3 - 4 semanas), como no tratamento da acne, poderia haver risco de comprometimento da cartilagem de crescimento, da coloração dos dentes ou da flora intestinal do lactente, motivo pelo qual pode ser melhor escolher uma alternativa. Levar em conta a possibilidade de gastroenterite por alteração da flora intestinal. (Ito 1993) Autores especialistas consideram aceitável o uso deste medicamento durante a amamentação, especialmente em tratamentos de duração inferior a 3-4 semanas.
