São comercializados dois tipos de vacinas contra o vírus herpes-zóster-varicela (VZV) para prevenir a varicela e o herpes-zóster: a vacina de vírus vivos atenuados e a vacina recombinante não viva. (Marra 2022, Harbecke 2021) O vírus da vacina contra o herpes-zóster-varicela não foi encontrado no leite materno. (CDC 2023 y 2011, Bohlke 2003, Frederick 1986) Diversas sociedades médicas e autores especialistas consideram seguro o uso durante a amamentação de ambos os tipos de vacinas contra o VZV. (CDC 2023 y 2011, Red Book 2021-2024 p114 y 843, Anderson 2022, CAV-AEP 2019, Lawrence 2016 p402, Taylor 2003, Briggs 2015, Sachs 2013, Raney 2012, Chen 2010) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - As vacinas são compatíveis com a amamentação, tanto as que são microrganismos vivos atenuados como mortos, inativados, formadas por partes ou toxoides deles ou geradas por tecnologia recombinante. (CDC 2023 y 2011) Não passam para o leite, salvo a da rubéola, que não costuma infectar o lactente ou o faz de forma leve, e não ocasionam problemas nos lactentes, salvo a da febre amarela em menores de 6 meses. (CDC 2023 y 2011, Raney 2012, Chen 2010) A amamentação pode melhorar a resposta de anticorpos das vacinas e provocar menos efeitos secundários como febre ou anorexia. (CDC 2023 y 2011, Pickering 1998, Pabst 1997) O pós-parto imediato é o melhor momento para vacinar contra sarampo-rubéola-caxumba e varicela em mulheres que não estivessem imunizadas. (Bohlke 2003) As mulheres que amamentam podem e devem ser protegidas com as vacinas recomendadas como os demais adultos. (Schmidt 2004)
